The five mile climb to Kokomo Pass (12,020 ft) took over 4 hours. We mostly pushed our bikes. Because the trail was so steep, when we occasionally rode, we had to stop after a short distance to gasp for air. Once we reached the pass, we climbed another 260 ft. to Elk Ridge in a blistering, icy wind (all right, it was August but we're from Texas). Continuing another 3 ½ miles across the top took us to Searle Pass (12,040 ft).

The 24 mile ride took us a total of 8 hours. Ed said the climb to Kokomo was the slowest 5 miles he had ever done. Stan reassured himself during the ride that his loved ones would be well provided for by his life insurance. Anna's blistered feet testified to the fact that this was the hardest ride she had ever walked.
