Nearing the end of the weekend, Team UTMB reached Utopia in a state of euphoria.

While most riders were thrilled to complete their goal of riding the toughest three day ride in Texas, one rider took it several steps further. Hussain's goal was to honor Allah by maintaining his spiritual fast during Ramadan. This meant that during the three days of the weekend, after 6:30 a.m. he did not eat or drink anything until sunset at 7:15 p.m.

Many people let him know how dangerous it is to ride while fasting, especially riding a century on a day when the temperature approached 90 degrees. Hussain was careful to monitor himself throughout the ride, looking for danger signs. Each evening, not only did he not feel sick, he was ebullient with joy. (Photo by Stan Ford)
